Old PC – late 80′ / 90′

This is my personal games selection for “Old” PC Games. I’m mainly focused on late 80′, 90′ and early 2000 games. This cover games for 486 to K6-2 / Pentium 2 era. Throught there are some exceptions…

Meaning of the columns : 

  • Support : tells wether the game is floppy disk or CD-Rom based
  • CDDA: tells if the game provide in game audio CD music
  • Recommended config: tells what is/was the recommended PC configuration to enjoy the game
  • 3Dfx: tells whether the game is opimized for 3Dfx cards and/or if a patch exists to make use of this hardware

Pandemonium!Platformer1 CDYesPentium 100, 16MB RAM, 30MB HDDYes2.5D platformer. Requires a specific 3Dfx patch/executable for acceleration.

Quake IIFPS1 CDYesPentium 200, 32MB RAM, 4MB GPUYesNative 3Dfx support via OpenGL. Features a heavy industrial rock soundtrack.
Quake III ArenaFPS1 CDNoPentium II 350, 64MB RAM, 16MB GPUYesFully 3D accelerated. Uses music files instead of CDDA to save CPU cycles.

Sim City 3000Simulation1 CDNoPentium 166, 32MB RAM, 150MB HDDNoHigh-quality 2D isometric graphics. Uses high-bitrate audio files for jazz music.

Wolfenstein 3DFPS2 FloppiesNo286, 640KB RAM, 5MB HDDNoThe grandfather of FPS. Fast and fluid even on slow hardware.
Wipeout 2097Racing / Sci-Fi1 CDYesPentium 166, 32MB RAM, 4MB GPUYesOne of the best futuristic racers. Optimized for 3Dfx (voodoo.exe). Features an iconic techno soundtrack from The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, etc.
Extreme-G 2Racing / Sci-Fi1 CDYesPentium II 300, 64MB RAM, 16MB GPUYesPort of the N64 sequel. Supports much higher resolutions on PC. 3Dfx support is native and significantly improves the light trail effects.
Sega Manx TT SuperbikeRacing1 CDYesPentium 166, 32MB RAM, 4MB GPUYesArcade port from Sega. The PC version is highly optimized for Voodoo cards, offering arcade-perfect frame rates and textures.
Top Gear RallyRacing1 CDYesPentium 200, 32MB RAM, 8MB GPUYesPorted from N64. Features impressive car damage physics for the time. Support for 3Dfx requires the specific Glide patch to avoid graphical glitches.
