Sega Game Gear with Retrosix LCD : What is the battery life ?

Some time ago, I wrote about my pimped Game Gear with a brand new shell and an new LCD display from Retrosix. We all know that the orginal Game Gear has a very bad battery life of about 3 hours. This is mainly due to the original backlight mecanism : a fluorescent lighting tube.

With the new LCD display which uses led for backlight, I wanted to test the impact on the battery life. And I must say that I was surprised…

Test conditions

The batteries I used for the test are 6 NiMH 2400 mAh AA batteries (Amazon Basics) which already had about 5 recharge cycles. I have fully charged them before the test.

The game I used is an original cartridge : the well known Sonic the Hedgehog. I chose this game because it plays some differents demos with animations and musics without touching anything. The sound volume and the backlight were at about half level. 

Overall, in addition to a far better display, the battery life is greatly improved (300%), but the drawback is that the power led does not blink anymore when batteries become too much discharged. I still need to investigate the reason why…
