PSP 3000 : changing an old and yellowish screen

From all PSP models, the 3000 serie is my favourite (I don’t like the sliding mecanism of the PSP GO). It has all 2000 serie’s advantages (thin, bigger battery, 64Mb of ram, better speakers) and the screen of the 3000 serie is far better in terms of colorimetry and contrast. Unfortunately, like all other models, the screen tends to get a yellowish tint over the time. The screen is not really hard to change and pretty cheap. Bonus : the new screen makes the well known “scanline” / “interlaced” effect of the PSP 3000 disapears !

This is the story of my repaired PSP 3000…

Needed materials

  • A PSP 3000. I don’t own a 2000, but it may be similar…
  • A replacement display for PSP 3000 (can be found on aliexpress)
  • A tooth brush, some glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth
  • A phillips skrew driver

Opening the console

The first thing to do is to remove the battery as there are two screws under it. Then , there are two screws on the top and one on the bottom.

Removing the old screen

The screen is just blocked with a simple clip on the right and the buttons bar… Which has also legs on each sides. The button bar must be unclipsed first (there is no need to remove it completly). The screen can then be lifted up a bit so its 2 ribbon cable connectors can be opened to free the screen.

Putting the new screen

This is basicaly the same steps in reverse order. I removed the protective film just before closing the console. But before, I did some clean-up…

Clean-up

Over the time, the front buttons and even the bottom of the screen bezel can have a lot of dust. Before remounting the console, I used a tooth bruch, a glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth.

The Result

Photos on the left show the old screen and the new screen on the right.

And finally some photos to compare the PSP 3000 screen against the the PSP street one.
